Fashion Lookbook & Campaign Photography in Dubai:
A Guide for UAE Brands

A collection only sells as well as the photographs that show it. For a UAE fashion brand, a lookbook or campaign shoot is often the single biggest lever on how a launch performs, and one of the easiest things to get wrong without a plan.

This guide is written for brand owners, marketing leads and boutique founders in the UAE who are planning their first (or fifth) commercial shoot: how to cast the right models, what a lookbook actually needs versus a campaign, how a shoot day runs, and what it costs to do properly.

1. Why the photography is the product launch

Before a customer touches fabric, they see a photograph. On an e-commerce listing, a social feed or a press feature, the image is doing the selling on its own, with no fitting room and no salesperson to fill the gap.

Brands that treat photography as an afterthought tend to notice it in the numbers: higher return rates from garments that photographed differently than they fit, inconsistent visual identity across a collection, and campaign images that get outperformed by a competitor's cleaner catalogue shots. The photography is not decoration around the product. For most customers, it is the only information they have.

2. Lookbook, campaign, or e-commerce: what you actually need

These three terms get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems and often need different setups.

Lookbook

A clear, repeatable catalogue of the collection. The goal is accuracy: correct colour, correct fit, consistent framing so a customer can trust what they see across every piece. Usually shot against a plain or minimal background so nothing distracts from the garment.

Campaign

A smaller, curated set of image-led photographs built around a concept, season or story. A campaign is not trying to document the whole range. It is trying to communicate what the brand is, often shot on location with more mood, movement and art direction than a lookbook needs.

E-commerce

The most technical of the three: consistent lighting, consistent crop and consistent model pose across potentially dozens of SKUs, built to sit cleanly in a product grid. Less about mood, more about repeatability at scale.

Most brands need at least two of these across a season. Knowing which one you are booking before the shoot changes almost every decision that follows, from location to model brief to how many images you actually need delivered.

3. Casting models: agency or direct

Who wears the collection matters as much as how it is lit. Dubai has an active modelling agency scene, and for commercial work, going through an agency is usually the more reliable route.

Movement and energy in a controlled studio setting - the kind of frame a campaign needs that a catalogue shot does not.

4. Studio versus on-location

The choice between a studio and a real location changes the cost, the timeline, and the feel of the final set.

A studio gives full control over light and background, which is why most lookbooks and e-commerce sets are shot there: consistency across dozens of frames is far easier to hold in a controlled space. A location adds context, story and a sense of place, which suits campaign work aimed at building brand identity rather than cataloguing product.

A hybrid approach, a studio session for the core catalogue plus a smaller on-location set for campaign or social content, is a common and efficient way to cover both needs from a single booking.

5. What a shoot day looks like

  1. Pre-production call. Collection details, look order, model casting and location or studio confirmed at least a week ahead.
  2. Moodboard and shot list. A shared reference for angle, mood and priority looks, so nothing is decided on the spot.
  3. The shoot. Looks are shot in a planned order, with wardrobe changes managed against the day's timeline to keep pace.
  4. Review and select. A quick check partway through the day confirms lighting and styling are landing before continuing.
  5. Retouch and delivery. Final images are colour-corrected, retouched to brand standard, and delivered in the agreed formats.
Before the shoot

Send the collection's actual pieces (or accurate samples) ahead of time where possible. Fit and fabric behave differently on camera than they do on a hanger, and knowing this in advance avoids surprises on the day.

6. Deliverables, usage rights and pricing

Commercial photography pricing in the UAE is driven by scope, not just hours on set: number of looks, number of final retouched images, whether it is studio or location (or both), and how broadly the images will be used.

Usage rights matter more for brand work than for a personal portrait. A shoot licensed for the brand's own website and social channels for a set period is priced differently than one intended for paid advertising, print, or an extended multi-year licence. Agree this scope before the shoot, not after, since it is far easier to price correctly upfront than to renegotiate once the images already exist. Frequently Asked Questions

How many models and looks do we need for a lookbook shoot?
It depends on the collection size, but most small-to-mid Dubai brands work with one or two models covering 8 to 20 looks in a single day. Larger collections or multiple size ranges may need a second model or a second day to keep pace and consistency.
Should we cast models through an agency or book directly?
Agencies are the safer route for commercial work: they handle usage terms, availability and professionalism, and most established Dubai agencies can turn around a casting within days. Direct booking can work for smaller budgets or a specific look you already have in mind, but always confirm usage rights in writing either way.
What is the difference between a lookbook and a campaign shoot?
A lookbook is a clear, repeatable catalogue of your collection, usually shot against a plain background so every piece reads accurately. A campaign is a smaller set of image-led, styled photographs built around a concept or story, meant to carry a brand's identity rather than document every product.
What usage rights do we get with a commercial shoot?
Usage rights are agreed before the shoot and vary by project, typically covering the brand's own website, social media and e-commerce listings for a set period. Paid media, print, out-of-home advertising or an extended term usually cost more and should be scoped upfront, not assumed.
How long does it take to get the final images?
A standard lookbook or campaign delivery takes about 5 to 10 business days depending on the number of final images and the level of retouching required. A smaller, rush-turnaround set can sometimes be arranged for time-sensitive launches.
